Gary Kimball is president of Kimball Hughes Public Relations, an agency he founded in 1995. With more than 30 years of experience in public relations, Gary made his mark in crisis communications, helping organizations prepare for and respond to a wide range of situations, including financial crises, data breaches, corporate misconduct, natural disasters, bioterrorism threats, sexual abuse cases and more. He is a frequent speaker on crisis communications in a wide range of industries.
During the last 22 years, he and his agency team have led thousands of successful public relations campaigns on regional, national and international levels, both managing reputational risk for business-to-business clients and helping consumer brands reach the national stage. Gary’s specific expertise extends from the insurance and financial services industries to hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing and sustainable energy.
Before founding his agency, Gary served in senior public relations roles, including his position from 1988 to 1994 as director of corporate communications for Independence Bancorp, a $3 billion financial services company. A former journalist, Gary earned a master’s degree in journalism from Boston University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Colby College.
As vice president of Kimball Hughes Public Relations, Rod Hughes develops the strategic approach to many of the agency’s public relations and social media accounts as well as spearheading new business efforts. He became a partner in the agency in 2016. A former journalist, Rod has worked in and around the fields of law, insurance, real estate and technology for 20 years.
Before joining Kimball Hughes, he was the director of communications for a large suburban marketing agency where he managed several accounts in the real estate, professional services, restaurant and retail markets. Rod also led that agency’s public relations and social media practices, including crisis communications work for franchise and global business operations. Before that, he served as public relations counsel for a top 10 international law firm and was the campaign manager for a 2004 candidate for the 151st Legislative District for the Pennsylvania State Assembly.
Prior to moving into public relations work, Rod spent six years leading Law Office Computing and Legal Assistant Today magazines as editor and publisher. He held several reporter and editorial positions after studying journalism at Temple University and is a frequent public speaker on communications, management practices, social media and public relations related issues. As Senior Public Relations Manager, Eileen develops and implements successful media campaigns to convey client messages to target audiences, build brands and foster industry influence. With more than 15 years of experience, Eileen uses knowledge gained working within the insurance, financial services and association industries to manage client accounts and obtain impressive results.
Before coming to Kimball Hughes, Eileen served as an account manager at an integrated marketing agency in Baltimore, Md., where she oversaw the agency’s largest insurance account, a top U.S. carrier. There, she led and contributed to financial services, insurance, and association accounts of all sizes – from boutique firms to Fortune 500 companies. Eileen also served on the corporate communications team for Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, supporting the insurance giant’s property and casualty business.
Eileen began her career in Washington, D.C. as a journalist, where she covered financial services for the American Banker, BridgeNews and BNA’s Banking Report. She also worked as a reporter for Business First, the American City Business Journal in Columbus, Ohio, where she covered banking, insurance and nonprofits. Over the years, Eileen has used that writing experience and intimate knowledge of the financial services and insurance industry to pen hundreds of news stories, blogs, bylines, newsletters and more. Eileen is a graduate of Loyola University in Maryland.
As Public Relations Manager/Content Strategist at Kimball Hughes Public Relations, Samantha crafts compelling, timely stories that bolster reputations and engage diverse audiences. She plans, writes, edits and researches hundreds of articles, white papers, blog posts and social media posts every month and is responsible for the agency’s video production efforts.
Samantha joined Kimball Hughes Public Relations in 2010. Over the course of her tenure, she has played a leading role in advancing the agency’s strategic approach to content development and social media.
Previously, she served as an AmeriCorps VISTA with a Seattle nonprofit, developing a curriculum to help community organizations use social media strategically. She also has worked as a freelance writer and intern at regional and national publications. Sam has a bachelor’s degree in education from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.
As Media Relations Coordinator, Elizabeth Rubino is the eyes and ears of Kimball Hughes Public Relations. She monitors media and social mentions for all agency clients and supports all the agency’s media relations activities. She also coordinates account management, and manages accounts receivable and human resources functions for the agency.
Prior to joining Kimball Hughes Public Relations, Liz worked in the health care and medical management industries. She brought her skills to Kimball Hughes in 2007 and continues to play a central role in all agency activity. Liz attended Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
Ryan began his career in public relations with Kimball Hughes Public Relations as an intern in 2016. Now serving as a deputy public relations manager, Ryan helps support a range of client services in the insurance, real estate, non-profit, trade association, financial services and manufacturing industries, among others. Working with Kimball Hughes Public Relations’ team of public relations managers, Ryan’s responsibilities include developing and curating content for social media, drafting effective press releases, assisting with media relations efforts and conducting research.
Prior to joining Kimball Hughes Public Relations, Ryan worked for a home care agency where his primary role was expanding the company’s clientele. He did so by creating valuable content, organizing meetings with management and potential partners and promoting the business at events throughout the area.
Ryan graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations.
Kyle Hardner works with Kimball Hughes Public Relations as a freelance writer and editor. A professional writer since age 13, Kyle spent 15 years managing multiple content channels (executive communications; external and internal blogs; M&A communications; websites and microsites; consumer, clinical and technical magazines) for Lehigh Valley Health Network, a $2 billion health system in Pennsylvania. In addition to health care writing experience, Kyle has guided B2B digital content strategies for numerous companies. He’s freelanced for the Philadelphia Daily News and Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger. Jen began her graphic design career as an intern with Kimball Hughes Public Relations in 2002 while attending Moravian College. After graduation she spent three years with a marketing and advertising agency before deciding to embrace her entrepreneurial spirit and start her own design business. She now works with Kimball Hughes Public Relations on a contract basis addressing our clients’ design needs from conceptualization through completion. Jen recently moved back to her hometown in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with her husband and two children.
Meg Charendoff works with Kimball Hughes Public Relations as a marketing consultant. She combines marketing strategy with creative writing and skilled editing to develop compelling content that generates energy, engagement, visibility and, ultimately, growth for clients. An attorney for seven years before turning to legal and business publishing and professional services marketing, Meg brings 360 degrees of knowledge and insight to her work. Her clients include a diverse range of organizations, including AmLaw 100, mid-sized and boutique law firms, professional service firms, business-to-business companies, trade associations and nonprofits, as well as individual lawyers, consultants and other professionals. Through strategic content marketing and business development initiatives, Meg helps these organizations and individuals tell their stories, market their products and services, and enhance their visibility, prominence and reputation.
Before launching her own content marketing firm in 2010, Meg served as the national communications manager for Drinker Biddle. Prior to moving into legal marketing, she was magazines editor for American Lawyer Media, overseeing the publication of GC Mid-Atlantic, Executive Legal Adviser and the PALaw 100, and serving as an editor for the daily legal news publication, The Legal Intelligencer. A Boston native who has lived in the Philadelphia area for almost 30 years, Meg earned her B.A., with honors, from Wellesley College, and her J.D., magna cum laude, from Temple University School of Law.
Chris Winans works with Kimball Hughes Public Relations as a consultant focusing on financial communications strategy and crisis communications management. He has more than 30 years of experience as a journalist, a Wall Street financial analyst, a corporate and crisis communications advisor, and a C-suite thought-leadership strategist. He has advised financial services companies – including global life and non-life insurers, banks, asset managers and management consultants, among others – in both in-house and agency roles.
As a corporate communications professional, Chris has helped firms manage reputation risk through the turmoil of deregulation, the dot.com and real-estate busts, the Great Recession, sweeping re-regulation and chronically low interest rates. Most recently, he headed Hill+Knowlton Strategies’ U.S. financial services communications practice.
He spent more than two decades as a journalist, including 10 years atThe Wall Street Journal, and 12 years in corporate and crisis communications, including senior roles at AIG and AXA. He also spent five years as an insurance industry equity analyst, including Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers, and nine years in financial regulation, including A.M. Best Company and Promontory Financial Group. He is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University.
As an intern at Kimball Hughes Public Relations, Cara supports the Kimball Hughes team by helping with media campaigns and social media content, among other tasks. Previously, Cara interned for startup beverage company Mingle Mocktails and led the event planning for Villanova University’s annual Love the Skin You’re In fashion show. She has also written for Her Campus, an online magazine for college women.
Cara is a senior at Villanova University who will earn her bachelor’s in communication this spring. She is also working towards her master’s degree, hoping to complete the graduate program next year. Cara is passionate about diversity in the workplace and has spent much of her time at Villanova studying the ties between gender and communication. She is very excited to explore public relations in this new role at Kimball Hughes.
